There is no formula for locating the best spot.

Does a sub box need to be carpeted?
You’ll be fine. Carpet is for cosmetic reasons. It also helps keep the box from sliding around a little bit.
Where should a subwoofer be placed in a room?
Typically, you position a subwoofer along the front wall of the room. Moving all of the bass sounds to the subwoofer gives your front speakers the ability to focus on mid- and high-range frequencies. (The subwoofer can handle all the low-frequency bass sounds in a home theater.)
Can you put a home subwoofer in a car?
Running a home audio powered subwoofer in a car is an expensive process, a waste of time, a waste of labor, and completely pointless. Using a subwoofer driver, such as the Dayton mentioned, would be fine as long as the amplifier being used to power it is adequate.
